Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Unit (SMFU)

Unit's Objectives

1. Serving the environment and the engineering society in fields of geotechnical engineering, including designs, laboratory and in-situ testing, geological studies and soil investigations.
2. Providing geotechnical consultations.
3.  Covering excessively wider range for engineering services and geotechnical consultations inside and outside Egypt.
4. Covering excessively wider range for cooperation with other partners and specialists in the geotechnical fields.

Beneficiary Categories

1. National projects.
2. Private projects.
3. Contractors of earth works, foundations, dewatering and shoring systems.
4. Consulting bureaus for geotechnical design and Supplementary geotechnical works.

Engineering Services Provided by the Unit

1. Carrying out boreholes, site exploration works, soil investigation reports and geological studies.
2. Conducting different quality control tests in sites of earth works, soil replacement, backfilling, fill embankments, etc.
3. Carrying out specialized in-situ tests on piles, such as loading tests and pile integrity tests.
4. Carrying out the advanced  in-situ Pressuremeter Test throughout different soil stratifications using the Ain Shams SMFU's Menard Devices. (N.B. this service is not offered by any other engineering campuses over Egypt, whereas it is only offered by Ain Shams SMFU and almost three other private sectors).
5. Design of different geotechnical projects.
6. Providing consultations for different geotechnical and foundation engineering fields.
